Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Eamon Ryan and Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government John Gormley have launched a national energy saving programme designed to stimulate economic recovery. The three-strand insulation programme will cut heating bills for householders, reduce carbon emissions and create thousands of jobs both directly and indirectly over the course of 2009.

You can read how the grants work, who is eligible and what the rates are, etc. on the Sustainable Energy Ireland website. In addition, the article on the Construct Ireland website (excellent resource) contains more info.

I would however have a mild concern regarding the ‘Typical net BER improvement’ indicated. The benefit to a dwelling from different upgrades is very much dependant on each situation. A house with NO cavity insulation is clearly going to benefit more from cavity insulation than a dwelling which is already half full for example.

I recommend that a BER be carried out (this is part grant funded also), so that cost/saving analysis can be carried out on the specific dwelling and its situation.
